The Heights

Welcome to the Heights

Historic homes, hip aesthetic.

In northwest-central Houston sits The Heights, Houston’s oldest planned neighborhood; this part of town was developed in the 1890s. Driving through The Heights you’ll see Houston’s largest concentration of historic homes, which gives this neighborhood its one-of-a-kind feel. Craftsman bungalows and towering Victorians dapple the landscape, but you’ll also find newer constructions as this area continues to grow to accommodate its rising popularity. Get inspired by the outdoors at your fingertips, including a wide selection of parks and the Heights Biking Trail.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

The Heights is brimming with delightful neighborhood eateries and mom-and-pop shopping destinations. Savoir’s scratch kitchen is serving upscale American cuisine, and their chef-driven experience ensures that every meal is handcrafted to perfection. Here, they tap into Houston’s incredible local farms so that they use the freshest, most sustainable ingredients. For brick oven pizza, Coltivare is the place to go. Their rustic Italian menu and friendly atmosphere make everyone feel at home. Coltivare boasts its own backyard garden, so each of their dishes is crafted with handpicked ingredients. Their garden-fresh menu includes selections like ricotta gnocchi, striped bass filet, and a variety of signature pizzas. Old-fashioned southern cooking finds its home at Preslee’s, and this local favorite brings good food and good company together. With items like brisket tacos, fried jumbo Gulf Coast shrimp, and blackened chicken, their menu blends comfort food and coastal cuisine for an unforgettable experience.

Anyone who wants to spend an afternoon shopping should head to 19th Street and browse the Historic Houston Heights Shopping District to find remarkable antiques and finely curated vintage clothing. Shop popular high-end retailers at the Heights Mercantile, including Lululemon, Warby Parker, and Aesop. Plus, each Sunday the Heights Mercantile hosts a Farmer’s Market, which is an excellent opportunity to stock up on locally grown produce and artisanally crafted goods.

Things to Do

Due to the Heights’ convenient location, you’ll always have something exciting on your agenda. Plus, the neighborhood is incredibly walkable, so it’s easy to spend an afternoon wandering the streets and chatting with neighbors.

The White Linen Night festival occurs annually each summer, and the area bursts with mesmerizing live performances, delectable street food, and breathtaking art displays. Traditionally, guests wear lightweight white linen, and the party takes place on the 200 and 300 blocks of 19th Street.

Every year at Christmastime, the Heights transforms into a winter wonderland when Lights in the Heights sweeps through the streets. Historic homes deck the halls to compete in this annual decorating competition, including awards for “Most Wattage” and “Most Traditional” displays. Musicians take the stage on front porches, providing entertainment as guests mosey through the neighborhood.

For an outdoor escape, the Heights has several stunning greenspaces to choose from. Tree-lined Donovan Park has an elaborate, railroad-themed playground that is perfect for the family, and Halbert Park sports a tennis court, basketball court, and playground for an athletic afternoon.
