Memorial Park Area

Welcome to Memorial Park Area and Rice Military

A pastoral paradise in the heart of Houston.

Memorial Park is one of the nation’s largest municipal green spaces, and west-central Houston residents are fortunate to have such a wealth of outdoor beauty at their fingertips. Along the eastern edge of Memorial Park sits the Rice Military neighborhood, which takes full advantage of the remarkable outdoor space. Named for a World War I-era army training camp, Rice Military has a number of historic homes, primarily Craftsman bungalows, as well as a selection of new townhouse constructions.

Lovers of the outdoors are undeniably attracted to Memorial Park’s remarkable beauty. Low crime rates intrigue families desiring safety, and a number of cultural establishments such as the New World Museum and Zocalo Theater & Performance Art space bring vivid diversity to the area.

For nearly 50 years, the Bayou City Arts Festival has swept through Memorial Park each spring, and the nearby Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens houses a world-class collection of art and textiles in a 14-acre facility. The area is rich with art, culture, and a communal atmosphere.

The area surrounding Memorial Park has a large selection of both high end and casual dining options. Brenner’s on the Bayou is an upscale steakhouse with an elegant atmosphere. Their two-story dining room and beautiful landscaping add to the priceless experience, perfect for private events and celebrations.

Local amenities make shopping a breeze, with convenience stores, coffeehouses, and retailers all close by. Stop by the Teahouse for a milk tea with boba after a long hike, or head south to the River Oaks Shopping Center across Buffalo Bayou for high-end fashion boutiques.

Things to Do

Memorial Park is largely the area’s most prized attribute, with nearly 1,500 acres of greenery. The park was established in 1924, and its facilities include tennis courts, an ice skating rink, swimming pools, and a track. The area also has softball fields, sand volleyball nets, several trails for running and cycling, and plenty of space to picnic in the sunshine. Runners have been particularly fond of the Seymour Lieberman Exercise Trail. In 2018, the park was given a large donation to help fund its renovations and restorations so that it can continue to be an incredible asset to the Houston population.

Located on 155 acres within Memorial Park is the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center. This non-profit arboretum is open daily to the public without an admission charge. This botanical garden offers a variety of adult, children, school, and family activities so that everyone can enjoy this protected wilderness area and learn about Houston’s natural environment.

Schools

Rice Military and the Memorial Park area offer a variety of established school options for young minds. Here are a few of the remarkable schools that serve this community:

â–º Memorial Elementary, Pre-K-5
â–º Hogg Middle School, 6-8
